Label decoder
Every Skin Aqua tube is printed in Japanese. Five marks carry most of the meaning.
front of the tube, in gold
The UVB mark. Under the Japanese industry standard, a label prints SPF50+ when the measured value is above 50. It is the highest SPF mark a Japanese label carries.
next to the SPF
The UVA grade. PA runs from one plus to four, and four is the top: it stands for a measured UVA protection factor of 16 or more.
UV耐水性★★ · after the PA grade
Two stars mean the product passed a water test of 80 minutes in total. One star stands for 40 minutes. A label with no stars makes no water claim.
石けんで落とせます · back of the tube
No makeup remover is needed. Your usual face wash or body soap takes it off in the evening.
顔・からだ用で、化粧下地にもオススメです · on the gel
The gel is made for both, and the brand also suggests it under makeup. The 70 g essences are sized for the face.

The brand
Skin Aqua is the sun care line of Rohto Pharmaceutical, a Japanese company. The idea behind it is simple. Sunscreen should feel like skincare, so you will put it on every morning without a second thought. The brand’s own page describes the gel as feeling like water on the skin.
That is the first thing buyers notice. A Skin Aqua gel is thin and clear. It spreads fast and leaves no white cast, by buyers’ accounts. The essences are a touch creamier, closer to a light moisturizer. Both wash off with ordinary soap, and the label prints that in Japanese.
There are four Skin Aqua sunscreens on sale here, from $22.50 to $31.40. All of them print SPF50+ and PA++++ on the front. They differ in form, in size and in what else the label promises. The Barrier UV Essence has the most buyer ratings: 461, with an average of 4.4 out of 5.
Rohto’s directions keep the routine short. A small coin of gel or a pearl of essence goes on the face, then the same amount once more. Outdoors, the brand tells you to towel off sweat and put on a fresh layer every two to three hours. A thin texture helps with that, because a second layer of Skin Aqua does not feel like a mask.
Side by side
Same SPF50+ and PA++++ marks on every label. The form, the size and the price differ.

| Better choice when | You wear makeup and want a brighter base | Several people share one bottle at home | Your days are hot and you sweat | You use sunscreen daily and want the best value |

The range
The Skin Aqua range has two forms. The gels are made for the whole body. They come in a 110 g squeeze bottle and a larger pump, and Rohto adds three kinds of hyaluronic acid for moisture. The gel label lists no fragrance, no coloring, no mineral oil and no parabens.
The essences come in a 70 g tube and are aimed at the face. The Barrier UV Essence is built to stay close to sweaty skin, in the brand’s words. The Light Up Essence adds a fine blue and silver pearl that brightens skin tone the way makeup does, and it carries a light floral scent.
So the choice is practical. Take a gel if you cover arms and legs and want the lowest price per gram. Take an essence if the tube lives in your makeup bag and goes on your face first. Nothing stops you from using both: a gel for the body and an essence for the face is how many buyers do it.
Size is the other half of the choice. By the FDA’s one-ounce measure, a 70 g tube holds about two and a half full-body applications, so in practice it is a face product. The larger gel packs are the ones to buy for shoulders, arms and legs, and they cost less for every 10 g.
Sun math
One ounce covers a body, by the FDA’s count. Here is what that does to each pack.
The FDA’s figure for one adult body is one ounce, about 28 g. Divide the pack by it.
| Sunscreen | In the pack | Full-body applications | Price per application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light Up Essence | 70 g | 2.4 | $10.12 |
| Super Moisture UV Gel 165 g | 165 g | 5.8 | $5.15 |
| Barrier UV Essence | 70 g | 2.4 | $12.72 |
| UV Super Moisture Gel Twin Pack | 220 g | 7.7 | $2.90 |
Face only? A face takes far less than a body, so a 70 g tube lasts weeks of mornings.
Dermatologists advise a fresh layer about every two hours outdoors. Choose your start.
First layer at
Reapply at once after swimming, sweating or toweling off.
“An average-sized adult or child needs at least one ounce of sunscreen (about the amount it takes to fill a shot glass) to evenly cover the body from head to toe.”
“When outdoors, reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating, according to the directions on the bottle.”

Very Moisturizing
“It was great,” said one niece. “It was really good,” said the other. It's not sticky at all, and not heavy on the skin. And It doesn't have any white cast once applied. It also has a watery-like texture so it wasn't hard to blend at all, and it was easily absorbed in the skin. It actually felt so moisturizing on the skin. This was based on my two nieces’ personal experience of the sunscreen itself. Overall it was really good.

Safe Choice
Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Gel Hydrating Sunscreen is such a great everyday sunscreen, especially if you have sensitive skin. It feels lightweight and genuinely hydrating without leaving my skin greasy or heavy. It layers beautifully on top of daily skincare without pilling, which makes it easy to use every morning. One of my favorite things is that it does not irritate or sting my eyes, even after wearing it for hours. It leaves a soft, dewy finish that makes skin look healthy and fresh rather than overly shiny. A safe choice for daily spf wearers.

Great Sunblock
Really good for sensitive skin. It is also super light weight. At the end of the day it doesn't have that "yucky" feeling. I think it's worth the price for a 2 pack. It really feels like a smooth water on the skin.

Great product
The HighlightsWeightless water-gel texture: It glides on smoothly and breaks into a refreshing, water-like fluid that feels completely weightless. Zero white cast: It melts invisibly into the skin, leaving absolutely no white streaks or chalky residue behind. Hydration balance: The hyaluronic acid perfectly moisturizes dry areas without causing breakouts or clogging pores. No stickiness: It sinks in quickly and does not feel heavy or tacky, which is crucial when it is humid outside.Washes off easily: It stays put against sweat during the day but removes effortlessly with a standard face wash. Why It Lost One Star. While the performance is top-tier, I noticed the formula can sometimes feel a bit grainy or gritty right out of the bottle. The tiny bumps do dissolve and smooth out completely as you rub it into the skin, but the initial application can feel slightly less premium. Additionally, the finish leans a bit too dewy when the humidity gets extremely high, requiring a light dusting of translucent powder on my T-zone to control mid-day shine.

Light weight and moisturizing
Super light weight but gets the job done. I like that it absorbs into my skin. Other ones sit on top and make me hot/sweaty, but this works well for both my oily skin and my partners dry sensitive skin. It also definitely protects you from the sun. Highly recommend!!

Good to know
Skin Aqua is made for the Japanese market. Each tube sold here is an import, and its label is in Japanese. You will not find the Drug Facts panel that US sunscreens carry. The marks on the front follow Japanese industry standards: SPF for UVB, PA for UVA and stars for water resistance.
That matters for one reason. In the United States, sunscreens are regulated as drugs, and the FDA asks buyers of sunscreens from abroad to read the label and understand the differences. The marks are few, and each one has a plain meaning.
Prices move from week to week, and the same tube can cost more one month than the next. Skin Aqua has no US shop of its own. Orders are placed, paid for and returned at our retail partner. Check the size before you buy: the gel comes in 110 g and 165 g, and the price per 10 g differs.
Japanese labels changed in December 2022. Since then, water resistance has been shown with stars, and older wording was allowed on packs for two more years. A Skin Aqua bottle that prints stars after the PA grade follows the current standard.
Sunscreen is one part of a day in the sun. Shade at midday, a hat and long sleeves do work that no tube can. Use enough, start before you leave the house and put on a fresh layer through the day.
