Guide
How much sunscreen you need
Most people use too little. The numbers are easy to remember.
For the whole body: one ounce
The FDA’s number for one adult is one ounce, about a shot glass. That is roughly 28 g of sunscreen for one full application.
It sounds like a lot because it is. A thin gel makes the job easier, since it spreads without dragging.
“An average-sized adult or child needs at least one ounce of sunscreen (about the amount it takes to fill a shot glass) to evenly cover the body from head to toe.”
“At a minimum, most adults need about 1 ounce of sunscreen — roughly the amount to fill a shot glass — to fully cover skin not covered by clothing.”
What that does to a pack
Divide the grams in a pack by 28 and you get full-body applications. A beach day with two or three layers empties a small tube fast.
| Sunscreen | In the pack | Full-body applications | Price per application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light Up Essence | 70 g | 2.4 | $10.12 |
| Super Moisture UV Gel 165 g | 165 g | 5.8 | $5.15 |
| Barrier UV Essence | 70 g | 2.4 | $12.72 |
| UV Super Moisture Gel Twin Pack | 220 g | 7.7 | $2.90 |
For the face: a teaspoon
A face and neck need far less. Dermatologists measure it by fingers.
Rohto’s own directions for Skin Aqua put it another way: a pearl-sized drop of essence, or a small coin of gel, spread over the face and then repeated once more.
“When applying sunscreen to your face, use at least 1 teaspoon (about the amount needed to cover the length of your index and middle fingers).”
Old tubes
Check the drawer before the first warm weekend. A tube from three summers ago belongs in the bin, and a half-used one from last year is worth a second look.
“Sunscreen without an expiration date has a shelf life of no more than 3 years.”
